Carmen "Millie" Bermudez-Merner was born in Comerio, PR. Her family moved to Rio Piedras when she was four years old. She attended the University of Puerto Rico and completed a Bachelor's degree in Elementary and Special Education and 36 graduate hours in Counseling. For 17 years she worked as a Special Education teacher for the Education Department in Puerto Rico. In 1985, she was offered a contract with the Rochester City School District to work as Bilingual Special Education Teacher. She came to Rochester with her two elementary school age sons. Since then, she has been working with the district in different capacities. While in Rochester she completed her Master's degree in Bilingual Education and Advance Studies Program in Administration from The University of New York at Brockport. She remarried and raised her two sons along with her husbands' two children. Currently, she works as Assistant Principal at James P.B. Duffy, School # 12 and her four children are currently enrolled in college. Millie is involved with the Rochester community and professional organizations. She was a volunteer for the Puerto Rican festival for four years before becoming a Board Member as the volunteer coordinator. This is her second year on the board of the Puerto Rican Festival. She is member of the New York State Association of Bilingual Educators, the Rochester Council for Elementary Leadership, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, National Association of Elementary School Principals, and active participant of the Bilingual Council and school 12 PTA.
